  • First download the current „stable“ version of Tunnelblick from here. Note: If the latest version causes problems, you can find the last stable version here.
  • Then download our OpenVPN configuration file RUBvpn_Standard.tblk.zip and unzip it, if not done automatically.
  • Double-click the unzipped OpenVPN configuartion file and import it into Tunnelblick – either for all users or only for the current one.
  • Use the Tunnelblick-Icon in the menu bar to open the VPN details… and select newest as OpenVPN version. Also turn off all but the check mark „Monitor network settings“.
  • The connection is established and terminated via the symbol in the menu bar.

Software download

First download the current „stable“ version of the OpenVPN client Tunnelblick from the following (official) website (if the latest version causes problems, you can find the last stable version here):

Installation

The Tunnelblick installation program will now appear. If not, double-click on the downloaded .dmg file::

Double-click the Tunnellick-icon to start the installation. You will be asked for your passwort during the installation. Enter your password you use to log in to your Mac.

Tunnelblick is now started and you will find the Tunnelblick icon in the upper right corner (next to the clock). Click on it and select VPN details… for the settings:

Select newest as OpenVPN version. Please pay attention to the check marks in the lower area. Only Monitor network settings should be activated.

Connect and disconnect

  1. With Safari, browse to https://openvpn.ias.edu

  2. Login with your IAS username and password, the website will download the client.
  3. Open the client installer from your Downloads
  4. Open the 'OpenVPN Connect Installer.pkg' file.
  5. The installer will open (possibly under your other open windows).
  6. In the installer, click 'Continue'.
  7. To Continue, you must agree to the license. Click 'Agree' if you do.
  8. Click install.
  9. You may be prompted to enter your administrator password to install the software.
  10. The package should install.
  11. After installation, OpenVPN will immediately try to connect, which requires your authorization.
  12. Afterward, you should see a successful installation screen. Click 'Close'.
  13. You no longer need the installer, feel free to move it to the trash.
  14. Safari will now show that you are connected to the VPN.
  15. You will also notice an orange icon in your taskbar. You can control the VPN from there. If you want to disconnect, click the icon and then select disconnect.
  16. The next time you wish to connect to the VPN, click the orange icon and then select 'openvpn.ias.edu' and then select 'Connect..'
  17. You will be asked for your login credentials.
  18. When logged into the VPN, you'll see the orange icon in the taskbar with a green checkmark.
